This is a work for marimba and clarinet commissioned by ensemble Viðarneistí (Victoria Sparks and Dr. Cathy Wood). While premiered at the MusCan Conference in Spring of 2018, the ensemble and I had the joy and privilege of sharing it during the Icelandic Festival in Gimli, Manitoba that summer. Not only in Gimli my hometown, it’s also the largest Icelandic settlement outside of Iceland itself and, with the three of us sharing Icelandic descent, it was the perfect event to share the piece.
Into Dreams reflects the space in between the minutes between being awake and falling asleep, in the moments of being simultaneously both and neither, when the world around you slowly slips away as we drift off. The premiere program of Tori and Cathy’s featured pieces that were “in transition” between places, and being a new parent at that time, that was one transition I knew well.
Our son was born during the third month of my graduate degree. The call that my wife was to be induced came during a Conducting class that I’ll never, ever forget. From there, we endured many sleepless days and nights, living in the moments between wakefulnesss and rest for weeks at a time.
The music focuses on sustained chords that stack, particularly on the vibraphone, but also feature the clarinet colour weaving in and out of the texture; sometimes atop it, sometimes beneath it, and right in the middle other times.
